SALTWATER HEART was an installation of a water circulatory system on a catamaran that floated in the Bosphorus for the 14th Istanbul Biennial. It referred to both a blue whale’s circulatory system and the thermohaline circulation on whose proper functioning the cetacean depends. The artwork thus addressed the importance of a sound condition of the oceans that is endangered by marine debris and climate change. >> >> >>
“As of 21st century the biggest challenge we are facing is environmental degradation. Water bodies are at great risk. There is plastics in the ocean. Nickel in our rivers. Lead in our lakes. At a terrifyingly fast pace we are losing our water bodies ; more than two thousand lakes have vanished in the past hundred years, countless rivers have dried up or have become too polluted for life to flourish. Fortified with climate change and global warming, eutrophication, ocean acidification, water scarcity are all ecosystem scale threats we are facing.
